Max Rive and His Landscape

Born and raised in the flat country off the Netherlands, Max Rive visited the high mountains of Switzerland for the first time at the age of 5. It’s difficult for him to describe how he felt when his parents took him and his brother to the Swiss Alps. Looking at topo maps, making hiking routes and running in front of his parents and brother, it was immediately obvious that Max had a true and deep passion for mountains and landscapes.

They hiked a lot during those holidays, and he was the one who made the hiking routes, he was 6 years old at the time. He strongly believe a passion can be innate, and it seems he had that with the mountains and the adventures they offer.

Many years passed by before Max would go back to the mountains again during a last minute planned hiking trip in the Swiss Alps. Even though Max ended up in the hospital after 3 days, he found his passion for the mountains again and returned many times to the European Alps.

As big as his passion was for mountains, photography and other hobbies–such as motorsport and cycling–so small was his passion and motivation for the countless studies he followed. While his friends were often satisfied when he reached a certain level, he never reached that point of satisfaction.

The travels he made during his study made him realize that his current path and direction were only motivated by the expectations of his surroundings. After missing a deadline for his study Max decided to end his life as a student and stepped, only weeks later, on a plane to the Himalayas of Nepal. After almost losing his life in an airplane accident, and witnessing the major earthquake in April 2015, he continued traveling around the world to Chile, Argentina, Greenland, Sweden, Scotland, Norway and New Zealand.

It was just after a storm in Greenland when Max heard the news that he won the IPA awards, one of the biggest awards in today’s Landscape Photography. It was his big dream and ambition to win this award during his stay in the Himalayas and it was a confirmation that his hard work paid off and that everything was possible.

It is through his experience–that growth, fulfilling dreams and the success that comes with it will come eventually over time when following the things deep within your heart and daring to free yourself from all barriers that have been taught, learned and accepted in today’s society–which has given him confidence and understanding that everything is possible with his photography.

No matter how strongly he got attracted by the mountains and our adventures in the years that followed, it was only an experience. This changed when he started taking photos, which gave him a way to bring something other than memories back with him.

Collecting all those moments and scenes with his camera was incredibly addictive. Photography gave him a great amount of satisfaction after each trip, and the desire to go back to the mountains became even stronger.

His photography motto was simple: only do the same things better, and always try to do something new. With this motto and a simple compact as his first camera, he very gradually learned the important aspects of photography.
